Azerbaijan purchased fighter jets from Italy

The Azeri Times

Azerbaijan purchased 10 M-346 combat training aircraft from Italy and ordered 15 more such vehicles, the Russian portal ridus.ru reports.

The M-346 is an aircraft designed for enhanced flight training for pilots of the Italian and other countries’ air forces. It made its first flight in July 2004. The plane has two turbojet engines F-124-GA-200, which allow it to reach speeds of up to 1050 km/h. The plane can carry missiles and bombs weighing up to 3 tonnes on five nodes of underwing suspensions.

There are already 18 such aircraft in service with the Italian Air Force, 12 with Singapore, 30 with Israel, 8 with Poland.

Among the clients of Leonardo Aircraft, which produces these aircraft, there is the Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan, which first demonstrated the Italian-made aircraft in May 2017. However, then the information on the amount of data of the aircraft adopted by the Azerbaijani Air Force was not made public.

Note that in 2018 the Italian company Leonardo will begin mass production of a light fighter based on the M-346 training aircraft. This was stated by the head of the marketing department of the company Eduardo De Campos.

‘The new modification is being developed to expand the combat capabilities of the aircraft. Thanks to the use of the Grifo-346 radar, the M-346 will become a full-fledged light fighter and will be able to effectively use air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons. The fighter/attack aircraft version will be ready by the end of 2018,’ said De Campos.

It is not yet known how many of the M-346 aircraft purchased from Italy by Azerbaijan are training ones or combat-training. However, it can be assumed that most of these aircraft are combat-training, since so many training machines are not required to train pilots.

Belarus disclosed military supplies to Azerbaijan: 153 tanks, 60 APCs and 11 attack planes

Over the years of independence, Belarus and Azerbaijan have trading weapons worth more than half a billion dollars. At the moment, there is a representative military delegation from Baku led by the Chief of the General Staff, Colonel-General Nadjmeddin Sadikov in Minsk on an official visit.

In a special review, Sputnik collected basic facts about the military-technical cooperation of the two countries.

Azerbaijan over the past decades has become a reliable partner and the main consumer of Belarusian military equipment, although, used, as a rule. A serious breakthrough was the supply of the Belarusian Polonaise Multiple Launch Rocket System. It should be noted that the Azerbaijani military received an improved version of the Belarusian complex, which was tested last autumn at a training ground in the Gomel region.

In addition, only according to open data, during the period from 2002 to 2012, Minsk supplied the Azerbaijani military with 153 T-72 tanks, 120 towed D-30 artillery systems of calibre 122 mm, 12 self-propelled artillery systems 2С7 Pion of calibre 203 mm, 60 wheeled armoured personnel carriers BTR-70 and 11 Su-25 attack aircraft.

Baku became a priority partner in the supply of weapons due to the fact that at that time it was, perhaps, the most solvent client of all. With African countries, relations were not so smooth, and even the conventionally ‘rich’ Sudan was not very willing to pay for planes and training its specialists.

At the same time, the military relations between the two countries were not limited to simply buying Soviet equipment. The Belarusian enterprises of the defence complex actively modernised the S-125M Pechora and the 9K33M3 Osa-AKM SAM systems developed in the Soviet times. The Belarusian military-industrial complex also modernised the Buk-MB for the Azerbaijani Army.

In total, over ten years of fruitful cooperation, the Belarusian side, according to some sources, has raised more than $500 million. However, after that there was a tangible decline.
