ARMENIA ANNOUNCES POSSIBILITY OF NEW BATTLES FOR LELE-TEPE

The Azeri Times

‘At any time, it is possible to regain positions in Nagorno-Karabakh, lost by the Armenian side during the April hostilities of last year.’ This was stated in an interview to the Armenian newspaper ‘Zhokhovurd’ by Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, Lt.General Movses Hakobyan.

But immediately after this bold, at first glance, statement intended for the internal audience, Movses Hakobyan, who used to be deputy chief of the Armenian General Staff during the disgraceful defeat of Armenia in the April war, tries to soften the tone, adding that today there is no need for this: ‘Today it is inappropriate to solve small problems at the cost of a soldier’s life and the escalation of the situation. Don’t think that Azerbaijan doesn’t have the desire to take Karabakh. They have eyes on Karabakh, and Zangezur, from time to time also on Yerevan,’ said the head of the General Staff.

Hakobyan with regret and alarm acknowledges that during the April war Armenia failed to restore the line of contact.

The publication recalls that the loss of the height of Lele-Tepe was first officially recognised by the representative of the operational department of the so-called ‘defence ministry’ of Nagorno-Karabakh Viktor Arustamyan during one of the April briefings: ‘Lele-Tepe cannot be considered a strategically significant height, because the radius of the summit of the mountain is 5 metres. In comparison with the general landscape, its height is 20 metres. In the positional configuration, it does not have a significant tactical value. There can be no talk of strategic significance,’ he said.

Then, in an interview with Bloomberg, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan stated that during the fighting the Armenian side lost certain territories – on the whole, about 800 hectares of the territory were lost.

However, the publication asks: if Lele-Tepe was not of strategic importance, then why in the winter of 1994 about 400 Armenian soldiers died in the battles for this height?

In the opinion of Armenian journalists, the height of Lele-Tepe is of strategic importance, since it is located between the village of Horadiz and the station of the same name in the southeast of Karabakh. After the establishment of the ceasefire in 1994, the village of Horadiz remained in the occupation zone of Karabakh, and Horadiz station under the control of Azerbaijan.

During a meeting with Armenian businessmen in Moscow, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the so-called ‘Nagorno-Karabakh Republic’ (‘NKR’) in the future will have to become a full-fledged part of the Armenian territory. This is reported by Regnum news agency.

According to him, Armenia is not ready to make concessions on disputes with Azerbaijan about the territorial affiliation of Nagorno-Karabakh.

He also noted that ‘any concessions in this context will be perceived as nothing else but weakness,’ and that ‘the position on the territorial belonging of the region is immutable.’

This is a new statement by Nikol Pashin and another political adventure. Earlier, the Armenian PM stated that Armenia was not going to negotiate on behalf of ‘NKR’ and insisted that Karabakh separatists be recognised as a party to the conflict.
