Russian political scientist of Armenian origin, the leader of the movement ‘The essence of time,’ Sergey Kurginyan expressed his opinion on the events in Sumgayit 30 years ago.

‘In the late 1980s, I arrived in Baku, where events unfolded that had absolutely nothing to do with the officialdom, or with what our democratic opposition advocated,’ Kurginyan said to the Vestnuk Kavkaza. ‘What exactly happened there? I can say with all responsibility that when Armenians were massacred in Sumgayit, mocking them and performing some ritual actions, it was done not by Azerbaijanians, but by outsiders, hired representatives of the international private organisations.’

We know these representatives by their names, we know the structures they worked for then and work for now. These people were killing Armenians, involving Azerbaijanis to do so, then they were killing Azerbaijanis, involving Armenians to do so, then confronted Armenians and Azerbaijanis. The uncontrolled tensions were starting to unveil. We saw it all, we saw who stood behind it.’

According to him, the picture was horrifying, but the most horrifying was the other thing: ‘The fact that democracy and liberal myths that had nothing to do with this were perceived as the ultimate truth, as something self-evident, as something absolutely correct, they had already controlled consciousness. All these viruses had already bitten into the consciousness, and the crowds fled in the right direction, towards their own death, to their own miseries, to their own ultimate ill-being, in which they later found themselves,’ said Kurginyan, a frequent guest of political talk shows on major Russian TV channels.

Kurginyan’s statement came at a time when Armenia again took an active part in attempts to present the tragic events in Sumgayit as an ‘Armenian genocide.’

It should be reminded that on February 22 the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic issued a joint statement in connection with the 30th anniversary of the Sumgayit events. It said that the riots in Sumgayit were a provocation against Azerbaijan, organised by the Armenian special services and the State Security Committee (KGB) of the USSR.
